Durham region is growing rapidly and BarBurrito is expanding alongside it. With 5 restaurants across Oshawa, Ajax, and Pickering, our presence in east GTA isn’t slowing down.
The latest location opened up near Cineplex and Orangetheory Fitness in Bowmanville. Although co-owner Kyle has experience running his own fishing charter business, he works full-time at Enbridge. Kyle and his wife Kia run the restaurant together while they raise 5-month-old baby Brooklyn. Talk about a juggling act!
They were inspired to get the keys to their own BarBurrito by their brother-in-law Zach, who also owns the Courtice and Pickering locations. As they live and work in Bowmanville, this plaza was the perfect spot to set up shop. The restaurant is located a short distance from their home and from a nearby high school. With students in mind, Kyle opted for USB outlets so that patrons could charge electronics while they enjoy burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and fries.
The owners have also partnered with Durham College’s Community Employment Services, a program that connects local employers and job-seekers. Along with recruiting staff, the restaurant is able to offer training placements for those in the community looking to gain new skills.
Outside of work and the baby, Kyle loves all things fish. You can find him fishing on Lake Ontario or eating sashimi at a sushi joint. Since he can’t get Japanese at BarBurrito, his favourite item off the menu is Extreme Fries.
What are Kyle and Kia’s plans for the future? Once their liquor license is in place, they want to partner with neighbouring breweries to feature local lagers. A patio is also in the works, so someday Bowmanville residents can savour cold beer and hot burritos outside under the patio lights. The hope is that this restaurant will contribute to their retirement.
